As part of our quest toward deeper learning, we are in the process of establishing a Makerspace in our school.

The idea of the Makerspace stems from providing students with opportunities to imagine, create, innovate, experiment, collaborate, share, and learn. Creating a Makerspace supports the importance of hands-on, student-centered, meaningful learning and embraces the knowledge that students learn through exploration and discovery. True learning is a continuous cycle of curiosity, investigation, experimentation, research, and reflection, all of which are key features in making. Research shows that inquiry projects and hands-on experiences are effective in developing higher-order thinking skills and deepening knowledge and understanding.

A typical Makerspace looks like a workshop filled with tools, building materials and art supplies.

This is where we need your help. We are looking for donations of materials that you think students may enjoy using. Great items to start with are:

  • arts and crafts supplies: popsicle sticks, craft paper, pipe cleaners, straws, yarn, etc.
  • cardboard and wood
  • makerspacefabric and notions: buttons, beads, felt, empty spools, ribbon, etc.
  • sandpaper
  • Lego/Tinker Toys
  • used toys and games
  • hand tools
  • glue guns

Donations can be dropped off at the main office. If you have any questions please contact us!

The full potential of our Makerspace has not yet been defined but it will provide a variety of opportunities and will grow with us as we progress through the year. We know that allowing students to be Makers opens the doors to personalized and authentic learning, and are excited by all the possibilities that await.
