I want to first thank the students, staff, and parents for a fantastic week of remote learning. We had amazing engagement, but we were glad to be back for in-person learning despite all the snow day interruptions. There are no real changes in how we are doing school except for some spacing adjustments in band and choir. We are just completing the first semester for grade 10 – 12 students. Since we cancelled our formal assessment week, the snow days should not have a large impact on the end of the semester. The new semester will begin on February 7 and report cards for grade 9 – 12 will be posted on the parent portal on Friday, February 11, 2022.

Sixer basketball season has started. A huge thank you to our coaches/managers.

  • Brent Martin – Grade 7 Girls
  • Nathan Plett and Ms. Jordan Myall – Grade 7 Boys
  • Nathan Rogalsky – Grade 8 boys
  • Howard Plett, Nathan Rogalsky and Larissa Plett – Varsity Boys

Currently, public health orders for schools are not allowing spectators at games, but we are livestreaming all home and away games. Please see our website for schedules and links to the action.

February is I Love to Read month and our ELA teachers together with Ms. Schalm, our Learning Commons Support Specialist, want our students to get hyped up about reading! There are a few events and competitions that will be going on throughout the month.

  1. Blind Date with a Book – In the library keep your eyes peeled for that ‘special text’ – you’ll see some great reads that are modestly described and under wraps! Find your new wordy love!
  2. Book Spine Reading Competition – This competition pits each grade and the staff in a major reading competition!! After you finish reading a book, go to the library to fill out a book spine and add it to your grades ‘shelf.’ The group with the most books read at the end of the month wins!
  3. Book Bingo – Each class in grades 7 – 10 will be pitted against each other to be the first to complete a Full Card Bingo! Divide up the tasks and complete to compete!

There will be book related draws and prizes throughout the month – make sure to participate #readingislife, #lcreads2022, #needinagoodreadin

Sixer Day is on February 10, 2022, because it is the 96th day of school! Everyone is encouraged to wear their sixer gear or blue and white. Pink Shirt Day is on February 23, and everyone is encouraged to wear something pink in support of creating a kinder and more inclusive world.

Grade 12 parents and students are encouraged to check our website regularly for updates on Post-Secondary Information. Many universities have their open houses in February.

Grad picture day is on Friday, February 25, 2022. Grads will book their spot online. Information will be coming in the next week.

We have been approved for some renovations to our school. The outdated science lab by the front entrance will be renovated as part of a provincial program. Unfortunately, this project will take 6- 8 months and we will need to relocate some classes. The project is expected to start in mid to late February in hopes that it will be completed by September. Some other renovations planned are a new rug in the learning commons and replacing all battery-operated analog clocks with digital clocks on a single system throughout the school. We are also expecting some additional security cameras to be installed later in the year.

We have a new counsellor from Addictions Foundation of Manitoba. Mr. Larry Whelan is available to students and/or parents of Hanover School Division. Mr. Whelan will be taking over from Ms. Paterson on February 8, 2022, and he will be at our school on Tuesdays to meet with students, However, parents and/or guardians can call as well to discuss concerns.

We would also like to remind our community of some safety issues. Our crossing guards continue to report that there are drivers who are speeding through the school zone, especially during the peak crossing times. As well, we want to remind anybody who comes to school to drop off or pick up a student, that it is illegal to pass a bus while it’s stop sign is out. We have had several drivers passing the busses, especially at the end of the day. Bus drivers are encouraged to report these offences to the police. Passing all three busses would mean three separate offences.

Just a reminder that there is no school on Louis Riel Day, Monday, February 21, and on the HSD Professional Development Day on Friday, February 25, 2022.

The staff at Landmark Collegiate want to thank all parents/guardians for their fantastic support and understanding as we continue to work through some of the challenges these times bring.
