Principal’s Message

Spring is starting to make its appearance! With the warmer sunshine we have noticed a new energy at school. Students look forward to being outside a little more at their breaks, some eat their lunch outdoors, and the outdoor basketball courts are getting used more.

As we head into the final two months of school, we want to make every day at school a day of meaningful learning. I begin (almost) every day by asking our students to encourage one another. It seems to me that all of us can use a regular dose of encouragement, whether that is about tackling challenging learning, in our friendships, or our general feeling about the day. When I talk about meaningful learning, I think about encouraging our students to learn the curriculum and also continuing to grow to be a great school community.

In the next two months we will be preparing for graduation, welcoming Grade 6 students and their families to our school, helping our Grade 8 students begin to make decisions about high school courses, and getting high school students registered for next year’s courses. In addition to that, our students will be kept busy with sports, music, and some fun school spirit events. Add provincial and local final exams to the mix, and you can see there is a lot to do!

You can read more about this in other parts of the newsletter.

Sports

Our badminton season has officially concluded, and it was a very successful one. Congratulations to our junior varsity athletes: Meika Johnson and Bethany Braun qualified for provincials in girls doubles, and Rowan Chapman-Beernaerts qualified in boys singles. We also want to congratulate all of our middle school badminton players who qualified for the finals. We are proud of their hard work and achievements.

Preparations are now underway for our girls softball season. We are pleased to welcome Steph Reimer as this year’s coach, and we look forward to an enjoyable season of practices and tournaments.

Later this spring, several of our students will also be participating in a beach volleyball event in Winnipeg. This tournament is open to all interested players and offers two divisions: a competitive two-person team category and a non-competitive three-person team category. Due to the sport’s growing popularity, the event has expanded to run over four days.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to compete in a one-day golf tournament before the school year concludes. We are excited about the busy and rewarding weeks ahead for our athletics program.

Band

Congratulations to our Grade 7 Band! We are proud to share that our Grade 7 Band performed exceptionally well at the festival on April 22. The adjudicators had many positive comments about their musicality and teamwork. We’re excited to see how these young musicians continue to grow in the years ahead!

Upcoming Concert – May 7
Our Senior Band is thrilled to present a special concert for the elementary students on May 7, featuring Selections from Disney movies. This annual event is always a highlight for both the performers and the younger students who come to watch.

Senior Band Trip – May 11–14
We’re excited to announce that the Senior Band will be travelling to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan from May 11 to 14 for a band trip—our first since 2019! This promises to be a memorable experience full of music, learning, and fun.

Thank you for your continued support of our music program!

The process will follow the same format as last year, with students using a Google Form through their HSD account to submit their selections. More information to come!

Grade 9 Information Night (for current grade 8 families)

A reminder that families of current grade 8 students are invited to our grade 9 parent information evening on Tuesday, May 6 at 6:00 PM in the Learning Commons. We’ll share what to expect in high school, including course options, the credit system, and student technology.

Spring Fling

Our Spring Fling for students in grades 9–12 will take place on Thursday, May 8 from 6:30–9:00 PM. Tickets are $5 and must be purchased in the office ahead of time in order to attend. The evening will include Just Dance, ping pong, poker, music, food, and a chance to connect with friends in a fun, supervised setting.

Yearbook Sales:  Our Yearbook Committee has been working hard this year to capture moments and create a yearbook that represents this amazing year at Landmark Collegiate! Yearbooks are a great way to remember activities through the year such as sports, the drama, spirit week, and activity days. The Yearbooks can be ordered until May 7th through the order form on the LC website. The cost is $25 with an arrival date of late June.

Noon hours

Now that the weather has warmed up, students begin to have more options for noon hours.

  • Flatland is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch hour.
  • Some students choose to cross the street to spend time at the park. We are reminding students to respect the furniture (no jumping on the tables) and to clean up after themselves.

Pancake Breakfast
