We have had a great first few days of school and were excited to welcome everyone back after a summer away. I am looking forward to my first year here as Principal, and I can already tell that this school and community have a lot of heart and are committed to the education of every student who enters our school. I would love to meet you, if you are in the building, please pop by to introduce yourself. Feel free to email or call me with any questions or concerns. I hope everyone has a fantastic school year!
Vanessa David
Principal
Hot lunch
Our daily hot lunch program is back and will start on Monday, September 8th. You can place your orders on our website at lc.hsd.ca/students/canteen/. Please ensure that you submit your orders by 10 a.m. each day. Also note, our school is not nut-free. If your child has an allergy, please discuss the necessary precautions with them.
Volunteer Checks
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer to help coach, drive, or assist in other ways, please contact the office to fill out the appropriate paperwork. Since these checks can take a long time to complete, it’s important to do this well in advance of volunteering. If you’ve completed your volunteer application within the last five years, you only need to complete your declaration, which should arrive via email from the school division. Volunteer drivers, however, must fill out the paperwork each school year.
Parent Portal
The Parent Portal is a great way to keep track of your children’s attendance, report cards, emergency contacts, and permissions. Please sign in to ensure all your information is up to date. You can also pay your child’s school fees there or by using cash or a cheque at the front office. The fees for this year will be posted on September 19th.
Technology and School
We want to remind students and families about the cell phone policy that was implemented last year. Our grade 7s and 8s are not permitted to bring a cell phone to school. If you are concerned about school/home communication, please let us know. Grade 9 – 12 students can have their phones at school, but are not allowed to use them in class time. They can be stored in the classroom “cell hotel” or kept silent and out of sight. Grade 9 students will also be given a Chromebook this year as part of our divisional technology program. Students will be given instructions on how to use this appropriately, and families are asked to pay a $20 insurance fee each year to support any necessary maintenance or damage.
Course Changes
Students who want to change their course schedule should contact the office and Mr. Kipe, our new vice-principal and guidance counselor, will work with students to help them with their schedules and credit attainment.
Athletics
High school boys soccer and grade 7-12 volleyball will be starting up quickly as the school year starts. Stay tuned for more information about practices. If you are interested in helping coach a team, please contact Lucas Enns at lenns@hsd.ca.
Tech Ed
Our grade 7-9 students will once again have the opportunity to take part in technical education at Niverville Middle School. Grade 7s and 8s travel there once a cycle for either Industrial Arts or Human Ecology. Our grade 9 students will have their technical education split into three sections this year. They will continue to do Industrial Arts and Human Ecology at NMS, but they will also stay at our school for a section of Applied Arts with Mr. Kipe, our new vice-principal.
Strong Connections
Strong Connections is a program for students in grades 1-8 within the Hanover School Division. Students attend either on September 12th or 15th, so there can be a lower student-to-teacher ratio. This helps teachers get to know their students better. If your child is in grade 7 or 8, please check the Parent Portal for their specific Strong Connections date. For more information about this initiative, you can visit the HSD website at www.hsd.ca/learning/strong-connections.
PTA AGM
The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) welcomes new and returning members to join them for their AGM on September 22 at Landmark Elementary School at 6 pm.
Terry Fox Run
Our annual Terry Fox Run will be held on September 22nd at 12:00, followed by a hot dog fundraiser lunch with proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation.
Religious Exercises and Instruction
Morning religious exercises will begin next week and will run from Monday – Thursday at 8:40 am. Religious instruction (Discovery Time) will start in October for grade 7/8s. Only students with parental permission can participate in these.
Lunch Time
A reminder that we are an open campus at lunch time, meaning students are allowed to leave. Flatland is available for students at lunch from Tuesday – Thursday, with a free lunch on Wednesdays.
